Project Overview

In 2017 Project Waterfall helped to fund the expansion of 2 nurseries in Vietnam with our partners the Costa Foundation. Thanks to the money raised at UK Coffee Week 2016, Project Waterfall donated £41,550 to this project, bringing clean water and improved sanitation measures to the 2 nurseries, Hoa Cuc and Cupang, in Vietnam.

Thanks to the work of local construction and design companies, a total area of 1,808 metres squared was built across the 2 nurseries. As well as this, we funded the installation of a Water Supply System, a Drainage System, and a Sanitary System.

61% of rural population lack access to water and sanitation

8.4% live below the poverty line

Our work in Vietnam changed the lives of 390 children and staff across 2 nurseries.

healthier children

With clean water and proper sanitation at the nurseries, the children there are now at much less risk of developing water-borne diseases. This means that they can spend more time in school instead of at home sick, will have better concentration when at school, and will have an all-over better start to their education.

healthier teachers

With improved sanitation measures at school, the teachers themselves are able to concentrate on their jobs of providing an early education for the children. They will spend less time sick at home, will be more comfortable in their place of work, and won’t have to worry about the water that they are drinking. This will in turn benefit the children at the nurseries.

beter education

With the construction of new classrooms, kitchens, playgrounds, wash blocks and more, the nurseries can now be used how they’re supposed to be; for playing and learning. With better facilities, the children can forget about dirt and disease and their parents can drop them off knowing that they will be receiving the best start to their education possible.

HOW WE DID THIS

Over the period of just 1 year, the money raised by Project Waterfall helped to fund the expansion of both nurseries, and the full construction of water and sanitation projects. This is how the local companies did this:

  • 1,138 metres squared was built in Hoa Cuc, and 670 metres squared in Cupang

  • At Hoa Cung, the construction company built 9 classrooms, 1 multifunctional room, 1 kitchen, 1 security room, and 1 playground. They also renovated an existing block for an administrative office and 1 healthcare room.

  • At Cupang, the construction company built 5 classrooms, 1 kitchen, 1 healthcare room, 1 teachers’ room, 1 security room, 1 cement yard, and 1 main gate and fence.

  • At both nurseries, a well of 86-87 metres was drilled which includes a submersible water pump and water pipes of different size.

  • Stainless steel water tanks were installed at both sites which are connected to the drilled well to supply water for the kitchen rooms, each toilet of every classroom and the bathroom.

  • One solar heat water system was installed at both nurseries to supply for the kitchen and one bathroom.

  • One kitchen room equipped with a wash basin and four taps (two hot and two cool taps) was installed at both nurseries.

  • 4 septic tanks were built at Hoa Cuc and 2 at Cu Pang, all consisting of three compartments (containing, clarifying and filtering).

  • System of pipes for drainage were installed at both sites.

  • Each classroom is installed with eight sanitary wares (four for girls and four for boys) separated by small partitions. In the middle of each toilet is a hand basin with four taps attached to soap trays.

Sustainability and education

Being exposed to the life-changing benefits of clean water and sanitation is something that no-one is ever too young to experience. The introduction of improved WASH projects to nursery schools creates a whole new generation who will grow up knowing what its like to have access to clean water. This will encourage the children at this nursery to demand access to clean water for the rest of their lives, and to never accept anything less.

As well as this, the children at this nursery now have a better start to the rest of their education which will in turn lead to better jobs and better futures. This will reduce poverty and break that vicious cycle of that lack of clean water causes.

Introducing clean water is always an investment.

the future

We continue to have a partnership with the Costa Foundation, and look forward to future collaborations.
