Introducing our new project in partnership with WaterAid that will bring clean water and sanitation to 46,845 people in the district of Bugesera Rwanda.
Over the past year our partner WaterAid has been working with the district government of Bugesera, Rwanda on a project that aims to provide 46,845 people in the communities of Mwogo and Juru with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) by 2025. We are delighted to announce that we will be supporting this project as it moves into it’s second year.
In the district of Bugesera the communities of Mwogo and Juru have large populations of farmers, but due to lack of rainfall and high temperatures the land can often become quite dry, making it harder for farming as the farmers must make longer journeys to collect water. This region is home to many lakes with readily available water, the only issue being access to this water. This project focuses on creating a solution through water distribution systems from Lake Akagera. Using an already existing water treatment plant to send water to new reservoirs and water pump stations built by WaterAid, this initiative will provide accessible water to the people of Mwogo and Juru, allowing for less time to be spent collecting water and more time spent on education and good hygiene practices.
WaterAid has made significant progress already with 90% of the new water distribution system completed, along with the completed construction of two new reservoirs and a water pump station. In addition, 250 households have improved their toilets, and 1,200 women have been trained on financial and IT literacy skills so that WASH can be maintained for years to come.
The goal by the end of the next 6 months is for Mwogo and Juru to have access to clean water through these new distribution systems. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing stories from the Bugesera community and our incredible delivery partners who are bringing this project to life.
